This proposal was approved by more than 170 countries, and on December 11, 2014, the UN declared the day as the International Day of Yoga. The purpose of the day is to celebrate and spread awareness about Yoga.

The selection of the date of 21st June also holds special significance as it is the Summer Solstice in the northern hemisphere; it is the longest day in India and it signifies transition. On 21st June, 2015, a special Yoga class was organized and almost 36,000 people participated in that class.
